“I draw the inspiration and strength for my life’s work from the rolling hills and tranquil waters of my family’s farm, my beloved animal menagerie, the human friends who share my world. . . and my books. There is an open book in every room of my home, with my favorite author changing daily. From time to time, I return to old friends such as Rudyard Kipling.”
When Earth’s Last Picture Is Painted
When Earth’s last picture is painted and the tubes are twisted and dried,
When the oldest colours have faded, and the youngest critic has died,
We shall rest, and, faith, we shall need it—lie down for an aeon or two,
Til the Master of All Good Workmen shall put us to work anew.
And those that were good shall be happy; they shall sit in a golden chair,
They shall splash at a ten-league canvas with brushes of comets’ hair.
They shall find real saints to draw from, Magdalene, Peter, and Paul,
They shall work for an age at a sitting and never be tired at all!
And only The Master shall praise us, and only The Master shall blame;
And no one shall work for money, and no one shall work for fame,
But each for the joy of the working, and each, in his separate star,
Shall draw the Thing as he sees it, for the God of Things as They are!
Rudyard Kipling
“The following poem was penned on the most magnificent of Autumn afternoons, a lifetime ago, as I watched a then two-year old with a scrunched-up face study a jeweled oak leaf, turning it over and over in his pudgy little hand, perplexed, then amazed by the majesty of its colors. The two-year old with the scrunched-up face is now handsome at 27, and is the Assistant Director of The Madeline Center. . . At Home.”
Wasted Time?
The world tells me I’m wasting my time,
watching these children grow.
But anyone who has ever
tied a shoe,
or wipe a tear,
or shared the wonder of nature with a child
knows,
in a way the world can never comprehend
That this
Wasted Time,
These days of self-discovery,
Are the very foundation upon which all future
accomplishments draw
for strength,
direction,
and purpose.
