About Us
The Madeline Center is an elegantly restored 1903 residence nestled among the boxwood, cherry and dogwood native to Virginia’s Blue Ridge. Dedicated on February 16, 1997, the Center was named in honor of the Director’s mom, Madeline Foster Hall. Born into a conflict-ridden, Depression- era family, Madeline overcame neglect and abuse to become a loved and respected member of her family, her church, and her rural community. Known for a lifetime of selfless living, Madeline continues to radiate compassion and good will. Quite simply, her life serves as a glistening example of what a life can be. The Madeline Center, along with its tranquil Karl E. Carter Garden, serves as home to a diverse but complementary group of highly qualified Licensed Professional Counselors.
The Madeline Centre, which is the name of our child and adolescent counseling services, is an extension of Madeline’s legacy. Its motto of “Linking our family to your family” is indicative of the caring way in which we provide ethically-based and therapeutically-sound services to children, adolescents, and their families. Its director, Dr. Deborah Berkley, has an extensive background in the delivery of a vast array of therapeutic services, as well as an expertise in the development and implementation of child, adolescent, and family psycho-educational programs. Dr. Berkley is committed to spear-heading the most effective family centered counseling program in Central and Southside Virginia. She practices a “hands-on” approach, and participates with her carefully selected and exceptionally trained Registered Nurses, Bachelor’s and Master’s level therapists, and Licensed Professional Counselors in providing the therapeutic tools necessary for meaningful change. It is her goal to assist The Madeline Centre clients in a greater awareness of “what life can be.”
